Loutra Stachtis (Λουτρά Στάχτης) Aitoloakarnania
Loutra Stachtis or Loutra Stachtis Porriari is a semi-mountainous settlement located in Nafpaktia of the regional unit of Aitoloakarnania at an altitude of 280 meters [1]. It has a population of 16 inhabitants according to the 2011 census and together with Kato Kampos, Ano Kambos and Stranoma they constitute the Local Community of Stranomi belonging to the Municipal Unit of Pillini of the Municipality of Nafpaktia [2].
Geography - Sights
Loutra Stachtis are built in the valley of the torrent Poriari, 30.5 km North - NW. of Nafpaktos [3] and occupy an area of about 100 acres. The surrounding area is overgrown with plane trees, holly trees, woodpeckers, oaks and is a natural refuge for many endemic species such as deer, wild boars and other animals and birds. The surrounding mountains and hills along with the stone bridges along the river Evinos and Mount Kotsalos are suitable for mountaineering and hiking. Near Poriari there is the renovated stone-built watermill "Mylos tis Panagias" which operated until 1950 and is dedicated to the church of the village [1].
Name - History
The name of the village comes from the ash color of saline deposits of the spring of thermal waters located in the western part of the area and they look like "ash". The spring with its thermal waters has been known since antiquity and some identify it with the mythical source of the virgin from Kalydona, Kallirois, who fell madly in love with the priest of the god Dionysus, Koreos. The baths also functioned during the Roman period, it is probable that they were destroyed in 218 BC. by the Macedonians of Philip II when the destruction of the temple of Thermi Apollo took place. A marble recliner of the Hellenistic period has been found in the area, as well as a gable column with the inscription "KRINOLAOU" at the location "Mylos Makrygianni" [1] [4].
The village was recognized as a settlement in 1981 and annexed to the then community of Stranoma. According to the “Kapodistrias” plan, until 2010, it belonged to the Local Department of Stranomi, of the former Municipality of Pylini of the Prefecture of Aetolia and Acarnania [5].
