The Museum of Fossils in Nostimo Kastoria
In 1935 a resident of the area, mining lignite, discovered the existence of fossilized trunks and marine fossils. Sixty years later, Evangelos Velitzelos, a professor of paleontology at the University of Athens, is making his first visit to the area, and excavations officially begin in June 1997. The researchers brought to light the fossil forest aged 27-23 million years. Specialists come to this conclusion after many years of scientific documentation of the findings dating back to pre-human times in the first period of the New Age [3] [4] such as shark teeth, mussels, stars, shells, snails, tropical and subtropical species. excellent fossilization.
