Neokastro (Νεόκαστρο) Aitoloakarnania
Neokastro or Niokastro (officially Neokastro) is a mountainous settlement of Nafpaktia in the prefecture of Etoloakarnania [1] and belongs to the Municipality of Nafpaktia.
Geography - History
Niokastro is located at an altitude of 820 meters [1], North-West. of Nafpaktos at a distance of 30 km. [2] from it and on the provincial road Nafpaktos - Loutra Stachtis. It is built between the southern end of the Tsokanes mountain slope and the torrents Niokastritiko stream and Mamoulasiotiko stream [3]. The shells and tiles that have been found in the wider area as well as the remains of a castle that exist at the top of the hill "Paliokastro" testify to its ancient habitation. In Venetian documents of 1499 it is mentioned as Paliokastello and a fortified location of the Venetians, while it is probable that it existed as a fortress and the Byzantine period [3]. In 1948 a community of Neokastro with the same headquarters was established. In 1997, according to the plan of Kapodistrias, together with Paliabela, it was annexed to the then Municipality of Nafpaktos. According to the Kallikratis plan, Niokastro together with Paliabela constitute the Local Community of Neokastro, which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Nafpaktos and according to the 2011 census, its population is 40 inhabitants [5].
Sights - Events
The old monastery of Panagia Filotheou located at an altitude of 750 meters and 3 km south of Neokastro on the hill "Lefka". The monastery was renovated in 1695, but was abolished in 1837 by a royal decree of Otto, which abolished the monasteries with less than 6 monks and subsequently destroyed it. The end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century. A new one was built, incorporating remnants of the old one, such as the Holy Table, the niche of the Holy Step, the stone floor [6] [3].
The route of a marked path that starts from the lows of the village, passes through the ruins of the old Venetian fortress, continues parallel to the gorge of Skas, passes through small successive waterfalls and ends at the torrent bed at the entrance of Nafpaktos [7] [8] .
The "Vlach Festival" organized by the cultural association of Neokastrites at the source "Hochlasti" in May on the day of the Ascension, 39 days after Easter. It is the feast of the cattle breeders for the Ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ who is considered their patron saint, with the main custom of making the pastoral delicacy "kosmar", but also other dairy products [9] [3].
