Kato Afroxylia (Κάτω Αφροξυλιά) Aitoloakarnania
Kato Afroxylia is a semi-mountainous settlement at an altitude of 200 meters [1] and is located in Nafpaktia, in the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania. It belongs to the Municipality of Nafpaktia of the Regional Unit of Aitolokarnania of the Region of Western Greece. Together with Ano Afroxylia, they constitute the Local Community of Afroxylia, which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Nafpaktos of the Municipality of Nafpaktia and according to the 2011 census has a population of 410 permanent residents [2].
Geography - Sights
Kato Afroxylia is built on the western slopes of Mount Rigani, next to the left bank of the Varria torrent [3]. It is located NW. of Nafpaktos, at a distance of 6 km from it [4], near the provincial road Nafpaktos - Thermos. It was first recognized as a settlement in 1940 and was annexed to its then community in the community of Afroxylia. Its first inhabitants moved from Ano Afroxylia due to the more fertile area and the better climate. The name of the village comes from the plant afroxylia or froxylia or sampoukos (aktea - shore the olive tree). It has the districts of "Babali", in the northern part of the village, "Platani", in the center and above the parish church of Agios Andreas, "Lygia" to the west opposite the school and "Thrami" which is the most recent on both banks. of the Varia torrent.
