Mygdalia (Μυγδαλιά) Arkadia
Mygdalia is a mountain village in the prefecture of Arcadia. It was the seat of the homonymous independent Community of the former Gortynia District, as well as the seat of the former "Kapodistrian" Municipality of Kleitoros, while today it belongs to the "Kallikratiko" Municipality of Gortynia [1]. It is located in the northern part of Arcadia and is built at the northern foot of the mountain range of Mainalo at an altitude of about 821 meters. [2]
Local Community of Mygdalia
In addition to Mygdalia (111 inhabitants), the settlement of Palaiopyrgos (33 inhabitants) belongs to the Local Community of Mygdalia, while its total population amounts to 144 inhabitants, according to the 2011 national census.
Designation
The village was originally called Glanitzia. It was renamed Stavrokkklisi on 20/08/1927 (Government Gazette 179/1927) [4], however this lasted for a short period of time, since about a year later, on 11/09/1928 (Government Gazette 193/1928) it was renamed to Mygdalia [5].
On 16/10/1940 the name was "corrected" in Amygdalea, however on 17/08/1978 (Government Gazette 129A) the name Migdalia officially returned [1].
Historical data
Before the war, it was reported that Migdalia had a population of about 900 permanent residents. The village was home to many important and prominent people. He also played an important role in the Revolution of 1821 and in the National Resistance during the Occupation, with many heroically fighting and fallen.
Other information
The central church of Mygdalia is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (1859). [2] At a relatively close distance from the village, is the artificial lake Ladonas which was created after the construction of a dam on the river Ladonas. [6], which is an important project, attraction and local development agency.
