Moni Agiou Nikanoros (Μονή Αγίου Νικάνορος) Grevena

The Monastery of Agios Nikanoros or the Holy Monastery of Zavorda or the Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior is located in Western Macedonia, on the borders of Grevena with Kozani. It is built on the top of Mount Kallistratos with an altitude of 650 meters, in an imposing location above the river Aliakmonas. It is 56 km SE. from Grevena, 52 km N.-ND. from Kozani, 63 km D.-BD. from Elassona and 24 km (by road) B. from Deskati.

History

The monastery belongs to the Holy Diocese of Grevena and was founded by Saint Nicanor from Thessaloniki in 1532 or 1534 next to a pre-existing Byzantine church of Agios Georgios. The catholic of the Monastery is decorated with frescoes attributed to the Theban painter Frangos Katelanos. According to local tradition, its name is due to the Turkish pasha of the area who had his child sick. When Saint Nicanor helped him do well, the Turk told Saint Nicanor "Za Varda", which means after all. [1]

The most important relics of the monastery are the icon of the Savior Christ, which has a silver lining and which was discovered by Saint Nicanor after a vision that became the occasion to begin the construction of the monastery. The Holy Relics of the Saint, which are placed in silver cases with relief representations of Saints, double-headed eagle and precious stones. Finally, her manuscripts are considered very important and especially the manuscript no. 201, known as the Zavorda Code. [2] [1]

Administratively

The monastery is officially mentioned and recorded as a settlement with the old name Zapourta Monastery from 1918 in the Government Gazette 260A - 31/12/1918 which belonged to the then community of Tourgiouki (today's Panagia). From 1927 with the Official Gazette 18A - 01/02/1927 it is initially recorded as the Monastery of Saint Nikanoros and from 1928 finally as the Monastery of Agios Nikanoras. [3] According to the Kallikratis Plan, it belongs to the municipal unit of Deskatis of the Municipality of Deskatis and according to the 2011 census it has 2 monks. [4]
