Metamorfosi (Μεταμόρφωσις) Chalkidiki
Metamorfosi is a coastal holiday settlement in the regional unit of Chalkidiki.
Geography
It is the seat of the local community of Metamorfosi with a permanent population of 600 inhabitants, which includes the homonymous settlement and Metochi, which is the monastery of Ioannis Prodromos with 69 inhabitants. According to the last census of 2011, the permanent population of Metamorfosi alone reaches 531 inhabitants. It belongs administratively to the municipal unit of Ormylia of the municipality of Polygyros. It is about 90 km from Thessaloniki, 30 km from Nea Moudania and Polygyros, and 25 km from Neos Marmaras. Geographically, it is located in the mouth of the Toroneos gulf, at the beginning of the Sithonia peninsula, on a forested slope and by the sea.
History
The area of Metamorfosi, before the settlement of the refugees from Asia Minor in 1925, was a part of the Monastery of Dionysiou of Mount Athos and the original position of the Mount Athos monastery that was dedicated to the prophet Saint John the Baptist. In 1950, the first children's camp was set up in the settlement.
The main occupations of the inhabitants concern the tourism services and fishing. The beach of the village attracts many visitors and is awarded a Blue Flag. Among other things, there is a kindergarten and a primary school, while cultural events are organized by the cultural association of the village. At a distance of two kilometers from the village, is the Holy Hermitage of Timios Ioannis Prodromos, which is a nunnery, in the place of an old share of the monastery of Timiou Prodomou, founded in 1975. The monastery celebrates on June 24 and August 29.
The village is very famous for its camps and hosts many children during the summer. They are the student camp, the private "Kalyva" camp and the "Dream" camp.
