Melates (Μελάτες) Arta

Melates is a village in the Municipality of Nikolaos Skoufa with 142 permanent residents (2011 census) and is about 30 km from Arta.

According to the Kapodistrias Plan, the Melates existed until the end of 2010, a municipal district of the newly formed Municipality of Peta based in Peta. Based on the new administrative division provided by the Kallikratis Plan, the Melates joined the Municipality of Nikolaos Skoufas. Melates together with Markiniada, Zygos, Megla and Diasella are the local community of Markiniada with a total population of 434 inhabitants. The author Giannis Kalpouzos was born in Melates.

Monastery of Melaton

A monastery dedicated to the birth of the Virgin Mary, celebrates on September 8. It was founded in the 17th century and was built for the second time in 1797. The illustration was made in 1821. It suffered many disasters in 1833 and 1854, but was renovated again. In 1944 it was burned by the Germans. It was a rich monastery with many flocks of sheep and goats, but also many land areas.
Production and employment

The now few inhabitants are engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry.
Location and access

The village is semi-mountainous, at an altitude of 217 meters. The river Arachthos flows next to it. The village is located between the villages of Ano Kalentini and Kato Kalentini, on the road axis Trikala-Arta. The old bridge of the village was built in 1938 during Metaxas to communicate the village with the fields that were opposite. The river and the natural environment are important for the community's economy. The nearest villages are Markiniada, Athamanio, and Kato and Ano Kalentini. Administratively it belongs to the Municipality of Nikolaos Skoufas. It used to belong to the Municipality of Peta and even older to the Community of Markiniada. It consists of the settlements of Selia (old name: Sezia), Varko, Diasella and Agios Georgios.
