History
The first source that informs us of the existence of the village is the archives of Venice, [2] in which we are informed that in the year 1697, Markiniada together with many other villages of Arta, paid taxes to the Venetian administration in exchange for protection from them. pirate raids.
Ifikratis Kokkidis also refers to the village in his work "Journeys of Epirus and Thessaly" published by the Greek Ministry of the Army (Athens 1880) and gives us the information that the village was inhabited by about 200 people. I. Kokkidis informs us that the province of Arta was divided into 2 areas: the area of Arta and the area of Preveza. The area of Arta was in turn divided into 7 sections: Potamia section, Vryseos section, Radovyzi section, Tzoumerka section, Kambou section, Karvasara section and Lakkas section. Markiniada was part of the Radovyzi section. [3]
Seraphim Xenopoulos, Metropolitan of Arta, is mentioned in the "Essay on the History of Arta & Preveza" (published in 1884). According to this source, at the time of the visit of the Metropolitan of Arta, about 35 families lived in the village. In the village there was the church of Agios Georgios and three chapels, of the Virgin Mary, of the Holy Trinity and of the Prophet Elias and was officiated by a pastor from the village. The metropolitan mentions that in the place of Dirziou, there was an old village and at a distance of half an hour, in the place of Kavvalari there was the ruined church of Agios Nikolaos. Xenopoulos also mentions that there was a textbook in Markiniada and about 20 students attended it. [4]
The final liberation of Markiniada took place in 1881, where the river Arachthos was defined as the border of the Greek state.
