Melanes (Μέλανες) Naxos

Melanes is a village in the western plain of Naxos, at an altitude of 110-160 meters and 414 inhabitants (2011 census). [1] It is 9 km from Naxos Town. [2] It is located on a detour of one kilometer of the road axis Chora Naxos - Kourounochori - Kynidarou and between the villages of Agios Thalalaios and Kourounochori. It is built on the northeast side of a hill opposite the Mills.

In World War II, Melanes, along with other surrounding villages, was a feeder of the mountain villages of Naxos and especially of Kinidaros, Keramoti and Koronos. It used to be the seat of a community of the same name, which included the villages of Agios Thalalaios, Grampouni, Kampones, Kourounochori and Myloi. It has an elementary school and was one of the first villages in Naxos with a telegraph office. The holy temple of the village is dedicated to the Holy Apostles.

Today Melanes belongs to the municipality of Naxos & Small Cyclades.

Administrative changes

In 1835, with 275 inhabitants (65 families), it was annexed to the newly established municipality of Vivlos in the province of Naxos, based in the settlement of Galanados. [3] [18] [19]
In 1912, it was decided that the settlements, which had more than 300 inhabitants and a primary school, would become independent communities. Thus, the settlement of Melanes is detached from the municipality of Vivlos and is designated the seat of the community of Melanes. [20] [21]
In 1997, with the implementation of the Kapodistrias program (law 2539/97), the settlement was annexed to the municipality of Naxos. [22] Specifically, with the Kapodistrias program, it was the seat of the Municipal Department of Melanes, of the Municipality of Naxos, of the prefecture of Cyclades, in the geographical department of the Aegean Islands. [23]
In 2010, with the implementation of the Kallikratis program (law 3852/2010), the settlement is annexed to the newly established municipality of Naxos & Small Cyclades. [24]

Today, after the last change of 2010 (Kallikratis program), together with the settlements of Agios Thalelaios (106 k.), Kourounochori (105 k.) And Mylos (27 k.), It constitutes the Local Community of Melanes (652 k.); where the seat is set. The so-called Melanon belongs to the Municipal Unit of Naxos, the municipality of Naxos and the Small Cyclades, the regional unit of Naxos (the former prefecture of Cyclades), in the region of South Aegean. Archaeological and historical sights
Fleur area

In Flerio in antiquity (but also today) there was an abundant flow of running water that fed the area. This wealth, along with the existence of marbles, favored the development of quarries, workshops and sculpture schools in the 6th century [25] BC. Attractions in the area are:

The sanctuary of Fleury, [26] where there are two unfinished couriers near it, one of which is easily accessible, while the second is in the nearby area of "Faragi" and requires little hiking. [27] [28] [29] [30] ] The kouros are incomplete because they were completed at the point where they were placed. The reason was that they were afraid of an accident, as happened to these two, and they suffered some damage during their transportation.
The aqueduct of Fleury, which in archaic and Roman times carried water to the ancient city of Naxos. Although it was a great project for its time and its construction took many years, nowadays there are only a few ruins left. [31]

Kalamitsia area

At a distance of 2 km from Melanes there is the "palace of the Jesuits". It was built in 1673 by the monk Roberto Soze. Nowadays it is abandoned and ruined. [32]
The orchards of Melanes

It is a green area with terraces irrigated by natural flow from the source of the Fleur. [25] The most common trees are oranges, lemons, apricots, pears and sour cherries. The water distribution system is organized so that each orchard owner has the right to use about one hour each week. Until recently, orchards were under French occupation. After the liberation in 1945, the Melanites revolted and succeeded in distributing the orchards to the local farmers.
