Mavrommati (Μαυρομμάτι) Karditsa
Mavrommati is a large semi-mountainous settlement and one of the historic villages of N. Karditsa; it is located at the foot of the historic Agrafa 27 km northwest of Karditsa and 3 km east of Mouzaki on the right of the river Pamisos (Bliooutri) at an altitude of 160. According to tradition, the fighter of 1821 George Karaiskakis was born in a cave near the monastery of Agios Georgios.
Historical data
Mavrommati is a creation of the Byzantine era (1100 - 1200) approximately, as it is mentioned in the first Ottoman census of 1454/1455. According to the census of 1454-55 the area of Mavrommati consisted of two timars: the first with an annual The income of 1,215 whites belonged to the Ortou and Sani brothers, who used it indivisibly. [citation needed] 31 families and 5 widows lived in it, cultivating cereals, flax, vines, and feeding sheep and pigs. The second timar with an annual income of 1014 white, belonged to Gionis [= Giannis] Mavromatis. In this timar, which had been granted by Theodoros Mavromatis, 28 families and 1 (one) widow lived. Its inhabitants also cultivated cereals, vineyards and fed sheep, pigs and bees. Over the years, these two timars - settlements were united and formed a settlement Mavrommati, as we know it today. According to the French consul in Ioannina, Puckeville, Mavrommati in 1800 had 100 families with about 400 inhabitants. In the period 1812-1818, Veli Pasha had a small farm here, cultivated by 48 couples, and with an annual income together with the 4 watermills, 35,000 grosis.
In August 1881, together with the whole area of N. Karditsa, it was liberated and became part of the Greek state. Then the Municipality of Ithomis was founded based in Fanari, which included 14 other settlements, among them Mavrommati with 724 inhabitants at that time. With the D / YZ law of 1912, the Municipality of Ithomis was abolished and Mavrommati became an independent community, together with the settlement of Kiourka (approximately 70 inhabitants) according to the Decree of 29.8.1912, a total of 800 inhabitants. [1] After the liberation, the population began to grow rapidly. In 1881 (850 inhabitants), in 1889 (950) and in 1907 (1,862) together with the 70 inhabitants of the now disbanded Kiourka settlement.
Today the population of the village, together with the settlement "Karaiskaki" located between Mavrommati - Mouzaki is 2,000, and in winter exceeds 2,500 due to the fact that Mavrommati has long been used by farmers in the mountain villages of Agrafa as a winter. Their inhabitants are mainly engaged in the cultivation of cotton, cereals, alfalfa, the breeding of sheep and goats, cows, and in the processing of wood with many handicrafts of this branch.
