Mandraki (Μανδράκι) Serres
Mandraki (formerly Mandrajik [1]) is a lakeside [2] village in the municipality of Sintiki in the prefecture of Serres. According to the 2011 census, its population is 379 permanent residents [3] who are mainly engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. The remains of a fortified enclosure are preserved on the eastern side of the settlement.
General and historical data
The settlement is built at an altitude of 80 meters [1], on the north shore of Lake Kerkini. It is mentioned in the 19th century as Mandrajik and was inhabited by Muslims. In 1913 it was annexed together with the rest of the Serres region to Greece and in 1922-23, after the exchange of populations, Greek refugees from Trabzon and other parts of Pontus settled in Mandratzik. At the same time in 1928 the village was renamed Mandraki.
Administratively, Mandraki was the community seat of the Sintiki province from 1913 to 1997, and then it was subordinated to the Kapodistrian municipality of Petritsi [1]. Since 2011 it has been the seat of the local community of Mandraki of the Kallikratikos municipality of Sintiki [3].
