Machairas (Μαχαιράς) Aitoloakarnania
Machairas is a semi-mountainous settlement in Xiromero of the regional unit of Aitoloakarnania with an altitude of 150 meters [1].
Geography - History
Machairas is located west of Lake Ozeros, at a distance of 35 km from Agrinio and 16 km from NW. from Astakos [2]. The village is built on the provincial road Astakou - Babinis. Its inhabitants are mainly engaged in animal husbandry, although until the middle of the first decade of 2000 they cultivated cereals and tobacco. Traces of ancient habitation have been found in the wider area with two most important ancient tombs of the 4th century BC. century made of lobster slabs as the foundation of an ancient building in the location "Rusta". The first reports about the village are from 1521 where it was inhabited by 13 families. In 1805, British traveler and diplomat William Martin Lake, when passing through the area, reported that the village had been destroyed by the Turks and that its inhabitants had fled to Zakynthos, where, according to local tradition, they had built the settlement of Macherado. It was first recognized as a community in 1912 by Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912 [4]. According to the Kallikratis plan, it is the local community of Machairas, which belongs to the municipal unit of Astakos of the Municipality of Xiromeros and according to the 2011 census, has a population of 320 inhabitants.
