The pool of the hydrotherapy center

From 1999 to 2010, according to the then administrative division of Greece, it was the seat of the homonymous municipal district of the Municipality of Menelaidos.

Loutra Smokovou are located in a green ravine, at an altitude of 450 m and are 6 km from the village of Smokovos (Loutropigi) and only 10 km from Lake Smokovou. The thermal waters gush from five springs at a natural temperature of 37 to 40.2 degrees Celsius and are channeled to the hydrotherapy center. They have a sulfate alkaline composition, slightly hydrogen sulfide odor and are considered to be among the best in Greece. Several hotels are built very close to the hydrotherapy center and all have views of the main square where most of the shops are located. After their recent modernization, they are all in excellent condition and are classified into various categories to meet customers of all requirements and financial capabilities. The Hydrotherapy Center is one of the most modern and since June 2009 the new SPA complex has started its operation, which in combination with the beneficial and healing properties of the thermal springs offers visitors relaxation and well-being. The new complex features a swimming pool, a fully equipped gym, two classic and two intermittent saunas, two steam rooms and two relaxing massage rooms. There are also individual inhalers, nasal washers and individual large, comfortable, clean bathtubs that, when pressed by a button, become hydromassage (jacuzzi). During their operation, specialized personnel are hired in all positions and there is a doctor permanently in the spa town.

The thermal waters of the springs are recommended for respiratory diseases, rheumatism, arthritis, neuralgia, myalgias, skin diseases, and gynecological diseases. The healing water with thermal water has been known in our country since ancient times not only empirically but also scientifically, which proves how much the ancient Greeks were concerned with thermal water. The ancient Greeks were well aware of some of the properties of thermal baths which they used not only for therapeutic purposes but also to keep them in good physical condition. Indicatively, we mention Herodotus (484-410) who established the time of spa therapy in 21 days. Today, therapeutic tourism is an alternative form of tourism that aims to take holidays to maintain physical and mental health. The Loutra Smokovou are also included in this perspective.
