Lesini (Λεσίνιο) Aitoloakarnania
Lesini, officially Lesinion, is a lowland village in the Regional Unit of Aitoloakarnania at an altitude of 20 meters [1].
Geography - Sights
Lesini is located near and west of the Acheloos river at a distance of 26.5 km NW. of Messolonghi and 15 km D.-BD. from Aetoliko. On the east side of the village passes the provincial road Aetolikou - Astakou while in its center is the Holy Temple of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is a small Byzantine church dating back to the end of the 13th century and its construction began in the years of the Despotate of Epirus [2].
Fraxos Forest
The most important attraction in the area is the Fraxos forest in the south of the village which has been characterized as a Landscape of Special Natural Good (TIFK) and is included in the pan-European network Natura (Nature) 2000. It is one of the few rescued wetlands. forests of Greece, which is formed mainly by the Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa tree as well as Populus alba, Ulmus minor, Salix alba [3]. The current area of the forest and the surrounding area was a swamp that was called Kynia (Ginias) and from 1930 it began to gradually dry up. In 1985 it was declared a protected "Monument of Nature" and its current area has been reduced to about 600 acres [4].
Name - Administrative
As a settlement, it is officially mentioned with its old name Paliokatouna from 1836 being annexed to the then municipality of Oiniados. In 1912, with the Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912, the seat of the newly established community of Paliokatouna is defined. In 1940 it was repaired in Paleokatouna while in 1967 with the Official Gazette 91A - 06/06/1967 it was renamed Lesinion [5]. According to the Kallikratis program, it is the local community of Lesini, which belongs to the municipal unit of Oiniades of the Holy City of Messolonghi and according to the 2011 census, has a population of 771 inhabitants.
