Lagka (Λαγκά) Rethymno
Lagka is a village in the municipality of Mylopotamos, in the regional unit of Rethymno, Crete. According to the 2011 census it has 40 inhabitants. It is located 27 km east of Rethymno, at an altitude of 280 m. The name comes from the word lagadi and Stergios Spanakis states that for this reason the place name is of the neutral gender, the laga. [1] The village has been declared a traditional settlement.
Historical data
The village is mentioned by Francesco Barocci in 1577 as Langa, in the province of Mylopotamos. The Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofylakas mentions Langha with 178 inhabitants and 958 due chores and Francesco Bazilicata in 1630 as Langa. In the Ottoman census of 1671 it is referred to as Lanka with 91 excavations. [1] The village is mentioned in the Cretan work of Michael Khourmouzis, in 1842. In 1881 it belonged to the municipality of Margarita and according to the census it had 98 Christian inhabitants and 15 Turks. In the census of 1900 it had 116 inhabitants and belonged to the municipality of Elefthernae. In 1920 it belonged to the agricultural municipality of Plevrianon. [1] In 1925 Laga was annexed to the Prine community until 1934, when it was annexed to the Margarita community. With the Kapodistrian administrative division in 1997, when he joined the municipality of Geropotamos. [2]

Sights
The main church of the parish of Lagka is dedicated to Ypapantis of Christ. It is a single-aisled church which was built in 1858 and on its iconostasis bears images of the 19th century. Other churches in the village include the Genesis of Prodromos and the chapel of Agia Paraskevi. [3]
