Krasounas (Κρασούνας) Rethymno
Krasounas is a village in the Cretan municipality of Mylopotamos on the northern slope of Psiloritis. According to the 2011 census it has 51 inhabitants. Krasounas is located at an altitude of 240 meters. The village is surrounded by olive trees and vineyards.
Krasounas has been mentioned at least since 1333, when the village pre-existed. In 1333 it is reported that it was the seat of a revolution, together with the nearby village of Margarites against the Venetians, with the result that the Duke of Crete Lavrentios Morosini campaigned against the two villages. The revolutionary brothers Sifopoulos or Xifopoulos were then hiding in the village. Although the rebels fled, the Venetians burned the village. [1]
It received the status of a traditional settlement in 1978 and has been designated a settlement of high cultural value [2] and since then the Venetian constructions that survive in the village are protected. A typical construction is the Geronymaki tower, which has been designated a historic monument. It is a four-story structure with a pyramidal end. It was part of a larger building complex, parts of which are only preserved in the area. According to its morphological characteristics, it can be dated to the period of Venetian rule and is a remarkable example of Venetian architecture. [3]
