Kato Poros (Κάτω Πόρος ) Rethymno

Kato Poros is a village in the municipality of Rethymno, in the regional unit of Rethymno, Crete. According to the 2011 census it has 53 inhabitants. It is 22.5 km from Rethymnon and is built at an altitude of 260 m. [1] It has been declared a traditional settlement.

Location

The village got its name from the fact that it was located at the bottom of two mountains that cross wild gorges. The village is built on the northeastern slope of Mount Azonas (560 m), which is full of caves. Another mountain in the area is Nisiani (430 m.), A continuation of Mount Kryoneritis. Near the village, the Katoporian river joins the Moundriano, in Dihalopotamos, which ends in the Petre river. Also close to the village are Kollita Farangia, with steep slopes with many rocks and caves. The area has numerous water sources. [2]

Historical data

From Mount Azonas, a 500-meter-long aqueduct began, which ended in ancient Lappa. [2] The village is mentioned by Francesco Barocci in 1577 as Cato Poro in the province of Rethymno. In the Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofylakas it is mentioned as Catto Poro in K177 with 249 inhabitants and it is mentioned again in K172 with 47 inhabitants and 98 due chores. Stergios Spanakis considers that the registration in K172 is a separate district of the village. Vasilikata mentions it in 1630 as Catoporo. It is not mentioned in the Ottoman census of 1659. [1] Sfakianos hainis Chantoumogiannis lived in the village. During the Cretan War, in 1647, the neighboring villages of Artos, Christochori and Nissi were destroyed. [2]

The 1881 census mentions the municipality of Argyroupolis and had 86 inhabitants, purely Christians. In the census of 1900 it belonged to the municipality of Lappaion and had 120 inhabitants. [1] In 1925, Kato Poros became part of the community of Argyroupolis, but in 1931 it became the seat of its own community until the Kapodistrian administrative division, when it was annexed to the Municipality of Lappaion. [3]

In 1944, in an inaccessible area between the village and Vilandredo, the kidnappers passed Lieutenant General Kraipe, who fell from the mule and struck. In the 1974 referendum, the result in Kato Poros was 100% in favor of a non-royal democracy. In the village there was a school from 1918 to 1984, when it merged with the primary school of Argyroupolis. The school was originally run by the teacher's house, and in 1929 the school building was completed. [2]

During the Turkish conquest of Crete, the Ottomans tried to destroy it, but during the disaster, part of the temple collapsed, overwhelming officials, at which point they stopped. The church was rebuilt in 1926. In the village inside is the church of Zoodochou Pigi, which was completed in 1984, after 27 years of construction. The construction was financed by George Em. Mavrorasakis as well as fundraisers of the villagers. It has been painted by Giannis Papadopoulos. Inside the gorge is the cave church of Agios Antonios. [2]
