Karya (Καρυά) Korinthia
Karya or Karyes is a mountain village in the prefecture of Corinth, west of Kiato. It is built at an altitude of 1,300 meters on the slopes of Ziria and is one of the most mountainous settlements in the Peloponnese. [1]
Karya belongs to the municipality of Xylokastro and its population according to the 2001 census is 71 inhabitants, who are engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry.
After the Revolution of 1821, by royal decree of 1834, Karya became a municipality and the first mayor in 1835 was Andreas Economopoulos. On November 27, 1840, Karya merged into the municipality of Sikyonia, later joined the municipality of Trikala, Corinth, while in 1997, finally, with the Kapodistrias plan, it merged with Karyotika in the municipality of Xylokastro.
In 1840, King Othon and Amalia visited the village. Karyes began to decline after 1880, when the population gradually began to descend to the large urban centers, but also to more lowland areas of Corinth.
In Karya is the Byzantine church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, from the 13th century, which has been turned into a half school.
Today the village has developed a lot. Stone houses, a hotel, chalets and rooms to let have been built. It also has a cafe and two taverns and is suitable for winter and summer getaways.
Karya has kept her pristine beauty with a lot of green, forests while on the horizon you can see the top of Ziria.
