Karpasi (Καρπάσι) Limnos
Karpasi is a village in Lemnos. Administratively it belongs to the Municipality of Lemnos of the North Aegean Region (Kallikratis program).
From 1999 to 2010, according to the then administrative division of Greece, it was the seat of the homonymous municipal district of the Municipality of Atsiki. It used to belong to the prefecture of Lesvos.
Location - Name
According to the local oral tradition, in the past the village was located in the plain where the airport extends today, specifically in the place Trochalomandra, where ruins and ruins of houses have been found. However, the pirate raids forced the residents to move to the low Carpas hill to the east of the large plain of central Lemnos.
The settlement was first mentioned only in 1785 on the map of Choiseul-Gouffier as Calpac. Thus, at the end of the 18th century, the movement mentioned in the old tradition took place. After all, until the 18th century there were other such transports of settlements from the shores to the Mediterranean. Papa-Aggelis Michelis notes that the periphery of the village used to be the property of the monastery of Patmos.
Various views have been expressed on the origin of the place name. According to one version, the name of the hill and then the village came from the Turkish "karabas: black head", according to a second from "kalpak: sock, abbot's hat" while a third connects the place name with the plant "karpason: kind of flax" or cotton, ”which abounded there.
Historical data
In 1854 the priest of the village, named Athanasios, also served the villages of Propouli and Krinida. In 1856 the 62 conscripts of the village paid 1,984 groschen to avoid conscription. In 1863, 44 Christian families were registered, which in 1874 had grown to 60. In the same year, there were 61 houses.
In July 1858, Conze passed through the village twice in search of ancient monuments. One rested in his square at noon and the other spent the night in the cafe. Karpas notes this in his text and map, as do De Launay (1898) and Fredrich (1904). The Carpathians sent a representative to the Pallimni provincial assembly.
The Church
In 1889 a Church of the Brigadiers in the village is mentioned, for the repair of which a fundraiser was held in Alexandria by the Black Reader. In 1901 a new church was built, Agios Pachomios, with the help of the inhabitants and expatriates. It is of a simple basilica style and the five-arched exonarthex is dominated by one-piece stone columns.
The school
In 1898 the inhabitants established a four-class school, in which 25-30 students attended. Expatriates from Egypt and the United States did not cover the costs of the operation. A few years later, the school was built. In 1919 a six-grade elementary school, a car, was established, which operated until recently. The school taught, among others: Papa-Aggelis Michelis (1911-15), Ismini Axis (1938-48), Rigas Gragra (1950-67), Prokopios Kalloniatis (1967-73) etc.
Modern Times
During the interwar years, the village developed rapidly. From 1918 it was a separate community, to which Krinida also belonged until 1940. The irrigation orchards of the village supplied vegetables all over Lemnos. Its working-class inhabitants also cultivated cereals, cotton, vines, legumes, sesame seeds and animal feed. During this period the population of the village increased rapidly. While in 1928 509 people were enumerated, in 1938 it had 610 inhabitants and 112 houses. About 100 students attended the school and by 1931 it had been upgraded to a two-seater.
After the war, large-scale immigration declined rapidly. Of the 517 people in 1951, only 168 were enrolled in 2001. Since 1967 the school has become a car again.
Apart from the agricultural economy, the winery of Petros Hatzigeorgiou has been operating in the village for years. There are also a few rooms to let.
