Kapetaniana is a village in the prefecture of Heraklion in Crete, located in the southern part of the prefecture and amphitheatrically built on the slopes of Asterousia, at an altitude of about 750 meters. It is 70.7 km from Heraklion and 21 km from the town of Asimiou via the road network.
Administratively, it is part of the Local Community of Stavia of the Municipal Unit of Kofinas of the Municipality of Gortynos. According to the 2001 national census, the settlement has a population of 113.
Designation
The name of the village comes from its so-called captains with their rich contribution to the struggles against the Turks.
Historical data
The first time the village is officially mentioned is in the Turkish census of 1834, while according to historical data, it was founded by Sfakian fighters, after the revolution of Daskalogiannis.
Churches
In Kapetanina there is a built church of Panagia (Assumption of the Virgin Mary) dating from the Byzantine period and in the 15th century and which celebrates on August 15 (August 15). Also, in the place of Metzolati, on the ruins of an ancient Holy Peak, there is a small church, dedicated to the Holy Cross, which celebrates on September 14.
