Ioniko (Ιωνικόν) Xanthi
Ioniko or Ano Ioniko is a semi-mountainous village of Thrace in the Regional Unit of Xanthi.[1]
Geography - History
Ioniko is located towards the borders with the Regional Unit of Drama and the Regional Unit of Kavala at a distance of 38 km W.-NW. from Xanthi, 55 km. E.-NE. from Drama and 67 km NE. from Kavala. The village is built on the southern foothills of the Western Rhodopes at an altitude of 232 meters[2] while to the south is the Lower Ionian and further south the Xanthi-Drama highway passes. Its old name, from the Turkish occupation, is Hussein-Kioi and it belonged from 1878 to 1912 to the vilayet of Adrianople, to the sanjak of Gyumultzina (Komotini) and to the kaza of Xanthi.[3] With the same name it is mentioned, after the liberation of Thrace, in 1919 that it was annexed to the then community of Kozlutsis (today's Kato Karyofyto). In 1928, with Official Gazette 4B - 16/01/1928, it was designated as the seat of the then community of Neochori and with Official Gazette 193A - 20/09/1928, it was renamed Ionikon.[4] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, along with Neochori, Kalyva, Kato Ioniko and Stavrochori, they form the local community of Neochori which is part of the Stavroupoli municipal unit of the Municipality of Xanthi and according to the 2011 census has a population of 45 inhabitants.[5 ]
