Aristi (Αρίστη) Ioannina
Aristi is a village in the prefecture of Ioannina in the municipality of Zagori, built at an altitude of 642 meters[2] at a distance of 48 km NW of Ioannina.[3] The original name of the settlement was Artsista, while in 1928 it received its current name.[4] The population of Aristi according to the 2011 census was 128 inhabitants while at the same time, it is classified as a traditional settlement.[2]
General elements
Aristi is believed to have been created or, according to another version, to have been populated with residents from the abandoned settlement of Vopatis and Agios Minas[5]. During the 19th century, a strong immigration wave was observed from Aristi to Serbia[6]. Aristi is historically one of the first Zagorochoria to have a school[7], which was financially supported by the contributions of the neighboring Spilaiotissa monastery[8]. During the Ottoman census of 1895, the population of Aristi amounted to 899 inhabitants[9]. During the last years of the Turkish rule, the settlement had a boys' school with 50 students and a girls' school with 40 students[10].
According to the data of the first census after the liberation of Aristi, the population of the settlement amounted in 1913 to 574 inhabitants[11]. Within the context of the Greek state, the settlement was initially included in the Dodoni province, while in 1997, following the changes in local government as part of the "Kapodistrias" project, it was included in the municipality of Central Zagori[2]. Since January 1, 2011, the village falls under the municipality of Zagori.
At a short distance from the village, there are ruins of a settlement - fortress from the Byzantine period as well as the holy monastery of Theotokos Spilaiotissa, the foundation of which dates back to around 1579[8][12].
