Geography - Sights
Aidonochori is located in the regional unit of Ioannina, towards the border of Greece with Albania, south of the Aoos river. The village is built on a wooded slope of Mount Dousko (Nemertsika) overlooking Aoos and the valley of Bourazani. It is 61 km north-east. from Ioannina and 18 km W. from Konitsa. Characteristic of the village are its many churches and chapels. The most important is the church of Agios Apostolos, which is a three-aisled vaulted basilica of the continental type dating to 1856 with an ornate iconostasis and wooden capitals. In the domes of the middle aisle, on the wall on the south side and in the niche of the Sanctuary, remarkable frescoes are preserved. It has been declared a "monument to special state protection since 1997". [4] To the west of Aidonochori, at a distance of about 2 km, is the Monastery of Taxiarches Gouras. It was built in the 16th century, on a rocky and fortified location overlooking the north and the point where Aoos and Sarandaporos meet and the surrounding area. [5]
History
The old name of the village was Ostanitsa. [6] During the occupation, on July 8, 1943, German troops invaded the village, and the next day, civilians were executed and most of the houses were set on fire. [7] Since 2017, it has been designated a "witness city" by presidential decree. [8]
Administratively
As a community of Ostanitsis, it was officially established, after the integration in Greece, in 1919 with the Government Gazette 184A-19/08/1919, based in the settlement that was renamed Aidonochori in 1929. [9] According to the Kallikratis plan, it is the local community of Aidonochori that belongs to the municipal unit of Konitsa of the Municipality of Konitsa and according to the 2011 census has a population of 45 inhabitants.
