Administrative Region : Crete
Regional unit : Chania
Tavronitis refers to the Venetian census of Kastrofylakas in 1583 as Tavronitti, with 77 inhabitants, but does not refer to the other Venetian censuses, nor to the Turkish censuses. The next reference is made in 1920, when it is referred to as the rural municipality of Tavronitis, which consisted of the settlements of Dempla, Kaneva and Plaka, but it is not mentioned in the census of 1928. Tavronitis becomes the seat of a community in 1929, which also included the villages of Dempla and Plaka. [2]
On May 20, 1941, the German raid of the Battle of Crete began from this village. The Germans managed to create a small bridgehead to the east of the Tavronitis River and then captured the airport of Maleme and Ypsoma 107.
