Ritsona (Ριτσώνα) Evoia
Ritsona is a geographical area located east of the province of Thebes in the prefecture of Viotia. However, due to its short distance from the strait of Evripos and the city of Chalkida, it belongs administratively to the Prefecture of Evia and specifically to the Municipality of Chalkida. Its name seems to come from the resin of the pines which until a few years ago abounded in the area. In recent years, due to frequent fires, most of the area has been deforested by pine forests. Today in Ritsona there are several vineyards, which produce good quality wine, large wineries, as well as several factories, most of which are located on the adjacent Athens-Lamia highway.
Its population, according to the 2011 Census, is 535 inhabitants.
History of Ritsona
The history of Ritsona dates back to the time of Homer, with the ancient city of Mykalissos. In the 20th century, the most important event took place in May 1944. During the German occupation of Greece, 110 invalid Greek soldiers of the Greek-Italian War were executed by the German occupiers in retaliation for an attack by Greek resistance fighters on a German military ambulance. later a monument was erected at the site of the execution in honor of the 110 Greeks executed by the conqueror. Because the area of the attack was the responsibility of the then community of Halia (today's municipal district of Drosia in the Municipality of Anthidonas), the original plan of the German occupying forces was to execute all men aged 16 and over. In fact, they gathered the male population to be executed by the community in threshing floors on the borders of the village. The execution of the Greek population was averted at the last minute with the intervention of strong personalities and actors in the region and Chalkida. However, they were unable to prevent the execution by the German occupying forces of the 110 disabled Greek soldiers of the Greek-Italian war, who were transported to the execution site by a military hospital in Athens, through the Hadjikosta prison.
Ascent of Ritsonas
Ritsona, Evia, is also famous for one of the most popular car races in Greece, the famous Ritsona Ascent. The first Ritsonas Ascent was held in 1956 by the Automobile Club and since then every year on the first weekend of December the above rally race takes place, which is the curtain of the annual Ascent Championship, in fact in 2008 the participation declarations exceeded 17 .
