Pigadia (Πηγάδια) Messinia
Pigadia is a settlement in western Mani. They are located NE of the Altomirs and are said to have been created by persecuted Epirotes during the Turkish occupation that came from the Five Wells.
Above Pigadia and in Taygetos, are Krya Vrysi, Dendra and Rizana, places of cultivation and vacation. The dry river of Santova starts from the village of Pigadia and ends at a pebble beach, near Kitries, while on its way it forms the gorge of Ridomos or Koskaragas. The communication with the other villages was done through cobbled streets that are maintained until today and facilitate the access to the hikers who cross the gorge. The double stone Pigadiotiko bridge is also famous.
The oldest finds of habitation in the area date from the end of the Neolithic era (3000 BC - 2500 BC). It is a stone ax, a clay vessel, part of a human jaw with two teeth, mammal bones and several fragments of clay vessels which were found by chance in 1954 in a cave at Kokkinochoma.
