Paravola (Παραβόλα ) Aitoloakarnania

Paravola is a town in the Regional Unit of Etoloakarnania, which is built on the north side of Lake Trichonida and near the foot of Mount Panaitolikos at an altitude of 90 meters [1]. It is 10 km east of Agrinio. As a settlement, it is officially mentioned in 1889 in the Government Gazette 251A - 04/10/1889 to be attached to the then municipality of Thermo. From 1994 until 2010, before the implementation of the administrative reform of Kallikratis, it was the seat of the municipality of Paravola [2].


History

In the center of the settlement rises a hill called Paliokastro, with a panoramic view of Lake Trichonida, at the top of which are the ruins of the ancient Aetolian fortress Vukation, which since 1976 has been declared an archeological site. Parts of the walls belonging to the 3rd century BC are preserved from this small fort. as well as a semicircular tower with three windows [1]. The Byzantine church of the Virgin Mary, which is limited to the eastern part of the middle aisle of an early Christian basilica of the 6th century, survives from the Byzantine period. The morphology of the arch is of particular importance. The temple was reduced to its current size during the time of the Despotate, in the 13th century. [4]

Demographics

Paravola, according to the 2011 census, has a population of 3,773 inhabitants and a population of 1,631 [5], while the census of March 2001 had 2,003 inhabitants [6], who are mainly engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. In Paravola there is a store EL.TA., OTE, K.E.P. as well as Primary School, High School and General High School. The patron saint of the town is Agios Dimitrios.

Climbing

At a distance of about 12 km, in Peristeri there is the shelter, built in 2001 by the Mountaineering Association of Agrinio, at an altitude of 1,170 m, in Panaitoliko, with a number of hiking - mountaineering routes that are offered for visits throughout the year [7]. There are routes of different levels of difficulty and the climb to many peaks is marked by members of the Mountaineering Association of Agrinio.
