Panethimos (Πανέθημος ) Chania
Panethimos is a semi-mountainous village in the prefecture of Chania. It is 44 km from the city of Chania and about 14 km from Kolymbari, to which the municipality belongs. The trademark is the village square surrounded by plane trees and other trees. In the same square there is a traditional spring with running water, while next to the square there is a stream with a small waterfall. All this in combination with the cistern and the laundry, which are preserved in excellent condition, were the focus of life for the daily life of the inhabitants.
In the past, Panethimos was the capital of the municipality of the same name. The village consists of neighborhoods that communicate with each other with alleys.
In 1999, the Cultural Association of Paneithimos was founded by the residents of the village, with the aim of the cultural and historical promotion of the village and the promotion of its natural beauty.
Designation
In Panethimos , according to historical data, there was a temple or monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary with the nickname Panagia the Panefimos. It was a well-known pilgrimage, with a large number of visitors and had a good reputation everywhere. From there comes the surname "Panefifimos", from which comes the name of the village, Panethimos [1] [2].
The name of the village is found either as Panethymos or as Panethemos. The census taken during the Venetian period mentions the place name Panefymos, and in 1583 with 129 inhabitants. [3] [4] [5] The census of the temples and monasteries of the Region of Chania in the year 1637 states [6]:
C Calogero Meletio Lurando et da in nota officiar la ch del nostro Salbatore nel cl. Paneffimo, con cura di anime et intrada botta una di vino con quella vive uno calogero.
Churches
In ancient times the place where the church of the Virgin Mary is located today must have been an ancient sanctuary. During the first Byzantine years, an early Christian basilica was built on the ruins of the church with mosaic representations. In its place was built the second two-aisled church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Agios Georgios and on it in 1958 the third church that exists today was built.
In Panethimos there are also four churches that form the shape of the cross:
East of I.N. Transfiguration of the Savior and Saint Spyridon
West I.N. Assumption of the Virgin Mary
South of I.N. Michael Archangelou
North of I.N. Agioi Anargyroi.
The latter two have recently been restored.
