Historical data
The name is pre-Greek and may have come from an ancient city. with the same name, which is not mentioned by the authors. In the area of the village in the places Lenika and Loutra there are remains of ancient buildings.
It is rumored that the etymology of the place name comes from the two young lords of Crete, with the names Pan and Assos, who remained friends, although they loved the same woman.
At a distance of 500 m there is a sulphurous spring, called Vromolimni, whose water was channeled to the aqueduct in the old days. Traces are preserved from this aqueduct, at Loutra, where there were baths.
The first reference is made in a notarial document of 1280 with the name Panasso. In 1583 it is mentioned in the relevant census as Banasso, with 319 inhabitants (Kastrofylakas, K 103).
The inhabitants of the village took an active part in the Cretan Revolution of 1866 and fought in the National Resistance.
