Oinoussa is a lowland settlement of the Regional Unit of Serres. It is located at the western end of Mount Menoikiou, 7 km east of the city of Serres. It belongs to the municipality of Serres. According to the 2011 census it has a population of 517 inhabitants, while according to the 2001 census it had a population of 524 inhabitants. Until 1928 it was called Dervesiani. [1]
History
Ancient times
South of Oinoussa (Dervesiani), at the foot of the hill of "Prophet Elias" where the Christian cemetery is located, the necropolis of a Roman settlement was discovered, [2] from which come three tomb inscriptions (two of them Latin). [. 3] Also, NE of the Eptamylos and about 2 km north of Oinoussa, on the slope of a steep rocky hill, the location of another fortified Roman settlement was located. [4] The hill rises on the steep bank of a stream that springs from the area of the Monastery of the Righteous Forerunner and at the top of which an ancient agricultural sanctuary of the "Hero of Avlonitis" was previously located. [5] [6] This is the "Thracian horseman" (or "Hero") who received this place name from the "flute" (= gorge, ravine) in which his sanctuary was located. From this it is speculated that the ancient settlement here was probably called "Avlon". This view is reinforced by the older name of the settlement "Dervesiani", etymologically derived from the word "derveni" (Indo-European root derven), which means closure (ie "flute"). [7]
Byzantine era
The ancient settlement on the hill of "Prophet Elias" managed to survive until the Byzantine era, during which it is mentioned in Byzantine documents with the name "Drevesaina" (from anagram of the word "Dervesaina", where the later name "Dervesa" came from). ). Also, the place where the sanctuary of "Hero Avlonides" was located did not cease to have a sacred character for the inhabitants of the settlement, as evidenced by the revelation of a hagiography of Panagia Odigitria (Infant), which is painted on the southern slope of the rocky hill. [8 ]
Newer times
Nowadays, the population of the area is mainly active in the agricultural sector and especially in the livestock sector, with cattle breeding and sheep and goat farming occupying a steadily high percentage of household employment. It is especially important to emphasize that the area of Oinoussa, Serres, is characterized by intense vegetation and high mountains that lead to Chionochori, Serres and nature is one of its main features. In addition, the river, as the residents of "Balantis" call it, crosses a large part of the village and the river in question once hosted a variety of fish, typical of trout. Today, some species are being reproduced.
In Oinoussa, Serres, every year the annual festival is organized in the Church of the village (Agioi Anargyroi) where many people from Serres and other neighboring villages attend.
