Historical data
Establishment

According to historical records codenamed by the monastery (1864), collected from narratives and historical tradition, the monastery was founded at an unknown time [1] by a monk Paisios, who was originally a brother in the Monastery of Apezanon and had come to frictions with other monks. He left for the Monastery of Agarathos and on the way he was forced to live in a small church of Agios Georgios, which was located on the estates of the feudal lord Lagouvardos. In his dream he saw a vision of St. George telling him that he wanted to stay there to expand his temple. Paisios stayed and finished the construction with the help of the locals. Lagouvardos had two entrances, one in Haraki, 2 km south of the Monastery, and another, in the area of the monastery. The shepherds that the feudal lord had had the same name: Sifis. To distinguish them, he called them Apano Sifis and Kato Sifis. The monastery also owes its name to this nickname. The monastery is mentioned in Creta Sacra (I, 222) under the name Monasterium Sancti Georgii Mart. Apanosiffi.

Later story

Many brothers of the monastery later became bishops of Arcadia. During the Turkish occupation, it was an important spiritual center where several clergymen were trained. At the same time, there was a bibliographic laboratory in the monastery, where the artist and bibliographer Georgios Gounales worked at the end of the 18th century. During the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Turks of the Bad Village executed 18 monks. The monastery was also visited by many foreign travelers, such as Pashley (1834), who says he had 11 monks at the time. From the beginning of the 20th century, it was subject to the region of the Holy Archdiocese of Crete, where it still belongs today. The brothers of the Monastery include the Archbishop of Australia Makarios and the Metropolitans of Chicago Nathanael, Austrian Arsenios and the Bishop of Apamea Paisios.
