Mazarakia (Μαζαρακιά) Thesprotia
Mazarakia is a village in the prefecture of Thesprotia, in the former province of Margariti. It is located south of Igoumenitsa and north of Margaritio. According to the latest administrative division (Kallikratis Plan) it is the seat of a local community of the municipal unit of Margariti of the Municipality of Igoumenitsa. Its population in 1928 was 1209 inhabitants. In 2001 it had a population of 525.
Ecclesiastically, it belongs to the Diocese of Paramythia, Filiates, Giromeri and Parga. The church of the village is dedicated to Agios Athanasios.
Historical data
In the northern part of a ridge ("Paliokastro" site), which rises between the present-day villages of Mazarakia and Mesovouni, the ruins of an ancient walled settlement have been identified. The settlement also survived the Roman era, thanks to the strategic advantages of its location, as it was located on an international land Roman road leading to the Roman colony of Photiki, on which it was administratively dependent. Its prosperity was also due to economic reasons, as the small but fertile plain of Mazarakia was, at all times, suitable for agricultural exploitation, while the surrounding mountains favored the development of livestock.
