Karteri (Καρτέρι) Thesprotia
Karteri is a Greek mountain village that belongs administratively to the prefecture of Thesprotia in the former province of Margariti. It is located NW. of Margariti at an altitude of 160 m. In 1928 it had 123 inhabitants. In the 2001 census it had 301 inhabitants.
A look back at the past
The older name of the village was Kartereza [1], or Karteriza and much earlier Smokovina [2].
The area was first inhabited around 1500. Karteri was a Christian village, in contrast to some villages in the surrounding area, such as Mazarakia, Ladochori, some of the Islamized villages of Filiates and Pagrates.
The inhabitants built churches, with the oldest being Agios Nikolaos, built in 1795, although in the description it has the date 1895.
Prior to 1913, Carter was a community with an elected community council. In the period 1941-1944, the village was set on fire by Tsamides. The villagers were expelled. Some who tried to resist were killed.
The inhabitants of the village, even today, are engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. Their language was Greek and Arvanite, which is still spoken today.
With the implementation of the new administrative division of Greece (Kallikratis Plan), Karteri is granted a local community of the municipal unit of Margariti of the Municipality of Igomenitsa.
Ecclesiastically, Karteri belongs to the Diocese of Paramythia, Filiates, Giromeri and Parga.
The costumes of the inhabitants
For men, it was today's pants, the shirt and some wore tsarouchia.
For women, it was the long dress, the apron, the vest and various silver or gold ornaments.
