  • Martha (Μάρθα) Heraklion
  • Martha (residents 178 in 2011) is a village in the province of Pediados and the seat of the homonymous Community of the municipality of Viannos, in the Prefecture of Heraklion. It is located at the foot of the southwestern slope of the Double Cup hill, 5 km after Ebaro. Its distance is 54 km from Heraklion, from where a new road leads west to Pyrgos and then to Agioi Deka. From Martha the road continues south and at a 5.5 km intersection on the right leads [1] to Keratokambou Bay. The inhabitants are engaged in the production of oil, cereals and livestock products. The village consists of two settlements, Pera Martha or Mikri or Evangelismou and Pode Martha or Megali or Agios Ioannis the Theologian. In fact, there are relevant mantinades in the settlement [2], which certify the existence of two settlements, as well as the products produced. The main church in the village is Agios Nektarios. There is also the chapel of Agios Ioannis Tsikaloudis, of 1902 and Panagia (Evangelismos), in Pera Martha, where the cemetery is located. There is an agricultural cooperative in the settlement and a cultural association is active.

    Historical data

The village is mentioned in Venetian censuses, but this does not mean that it did not exist in earlier times. According to one view, the name of the village is due to the nun of the Monastery of the Annunciation that existed in the area. Another version speaks of a noblewoman named Martha, whose mansion was located near the monastery. Today, ruins of this mansion survive.
