It should be noted that next to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary there is the church of Agios Georgios.

Historical data

The village since the time of Venetian rule consisted of two settlements, which is still valid today. The earliest reference to this is in a document from 1301. In 1583 it is recorded as Laragni Catto with 88 and Laragni Apano [2] with 58 inhabitants. During the Turkish occupation it was a Turkish village. In 1881, 304 Turks lived there and the settlement belonged to the Municipality of Megali Vrisi. In 1920 it became the seat of the homonymous municipality and eight years later, it came under the communion of St. Thomas. In 1925 he also received some refugee families from Eastern Romulia. From 1940 to 1998 it was an autonomous community of the province of Monofatsi in the prefecture of Heraklion. In 1998, with the Kapodistrias Plan, it became a Municipal Department of the Municipality of Agia Varvara.

The name of the village is due to its first inhabitant, who was called Laranis. Most of its current inhabitants are from Asia Minor.

The village protested its problems by abstaining from the 2004 European elections. [3]
