Kryoneri (Κρυονέρι) Arta
Kryoneri is a small settlement in the Municipality of Central Tzoumerka with 39 permanent residents (2011 census) and is located in the mountainous area of Tzoumerka, next to the river Arachthos. The settlement is about 35 km from the city of Arta while the distance from Vourgareli is about 23 km. [1]
According to the Kapodistrias Plan, Kryoneri existed until the end of 2010, a settlement of the Municipality of Athamania based in Vourgareli. Based on the new administrative division provided by the Kallikratis Plan, the settlement was included in the Municipality of Central Tzoumerka. [2] Kryoneri together with the Central, Andreas, Vathikambos, Lagkadia and Fteri constitute the local community of Central with a total population of 248 inhabitants.
Location and Access
Kryoneri is close to Central, Andreas, Vathikambos, Lagkadia, Fteri, Kardamos, Kampos and Dara. [3]
Administrative changes
The settlement was recognized in 1912 and annexed to the community of Nisistas (old name of the Central). In 1997 the settlement was included in the municipality of Athamania and in 2010 in the Municipality of Central Tzoumerka. [4]
Demographics
Today the population is 39 permanent residents (2011 census), [5] showing a decrease compared to the 2001 census, where the population was 64. [6] The first time the village exceeded 100 inhabitants was in 1928 and there was the maximum number of inhabitants. With the 2011 census, the population level set the lowest record. The decrease is largely due to the movement of many residents to the city of Arta and immigration.
Population fluctuations are shown in the table below.
Production and Employment
The main occupation of the inhabitants is animal husbandry. Remarkable products of the area are honey and aromatic plants such as oregano, chamomile and mountain tea. In Tzoumerka but also in the area of the plain, a variety of grapes thrives under the name "Isabella" or Zambela. Zambela is a hybrid grape that is very durable and tasty and is ideal for the production of tsipouro, but on the contrary it is not suitable for wine production. It is dark red or black in color and is considered wild. It cannot be grown in a vineyard. [7]
