Kollines (Κολλίνες) Arkadia

Kollines, formerly Ano Kollines, is a mountain village in the municipality of Tripoli in the prefecture of Arcadia, in the former Province of Mantineia. [1] It is located at an altitude of 780 meters and is about 40 km from Tripoli and Sparta. It is located on the border of the former prefectures of Arcadia and Laconia and the mountains of Taygetos and Parnonas built on the outskirts of Mainalo, [2] it borders the villages of Agia Varvara, Vlachokerasia, Kaltezes and Pellana. [2] The village has a post office, a rural doctor's office and a police station, [3] while there are also two festivals, one on May 9 (of Agios Christoforos) and one on September 8 (of Panagia). [3]

History

In ancient times the area belonged to ancient Skyritida, parts of an ancient road 160 meters long and statuettes have been found in the area. [3] It is believed that when the village was created, it is believed that its inhabitants moved here from the nearby abandoned Kleivitsa settlement during the First Turkish occupation. [4] It is believed that the first inhabitants chose the site because of the dense and inaccessible forest of the area which with its surrounding hills hid from the attacks of pirates and other peoples but also favored animal husbandry. [4] One tradition states that it was built during the First Ottoman Empire and another, earlier, during the Frankish occupation. [4]

During the Turkish occupation, the village was in various disputes with the neighboring villages, often reaching the Ottoman judge, Kadis, who also got into fights. During the German occupation and in 1944 the Germans burned the school and eighty houses in retaliation for a guerrilla attack, another forty were saved half-burned. [5]

The inhabitants of Lower Colin created the Lower Collins, today St. Barbara. [3]

Designation

There are many versions of the name Collin. One version says that the name comes from the landlords of the area whom the Franks called Collines. [4] Another version says that the name comes from the first settler named Collinos, in fact the house of today's ownership of another family is preserved. [4] A third version speaks of Colina, Nicolina's wife, who also bears the name Colina, who was his first resident with her children when her village of Kleivitsa was destroyed in a raid and her husband was killed. [2] Another version tells us that he comes from the old village, Kleivitsa, where he is also referred to as "Porta Kolina". [2]

Administrative history

During the Turkish occupation, residents looted two demagogues for a year on the plane tree in the village square. [3] Administratively they belonged to the Vialeti of Mystras. [3]

After the liberation and in 1835, the Colinites were subjugated in the Prefecture of Arcadia, in the province of Mantineia and in the Municipality of Kaltezountos. [6] In 1914, when the municipalities were abolished, it became an independent community. [6]

Education

During the Turkish occupation of the village, there was a school with priestly teachers where the children of Kato Kollina also studied, unknown from when it operated, a list of students from 1811 has been saved. [5] During the revolution, its operation was stopped for a while to operate again under Kapodistrias in a village church. [5] Later, a school office was opened and a school was built where in 1944 the Germans burned it. [5]

Folk tradition

In popular tradition, the Collins (Upper and Lower) had evidence that once fought Eurotas with two other neighboring villages and defeated them. [3]
