Kokkoni (Κοκκώνι) Korinthia
Kokkoni is a coastal community of the Municipality of Velos - Vocha, built on the shores of the Corinthian Gulf, in the middle of the plain of Vocha. In the 2011 census the settlement was found to have a population of 1,056 inhabitants. The main occupations of its inhabitants are agriculture and tourism, while in the area there are many holiday homes. [1]
Designation
According to the most probable version, the name of the area comes from the name Kokkonis, the surname of a lord whose providence was the specific area during the Byzantine period. [2] According to an alternative, the name comes from the word coconut, caressing the daughter of the local lord Ibrahim Bey, from which came the name of the neighboring Ibrahimbei (modern Fountains). [1]
History
After the establishment of the Greek state, Kokkoni was part of the municipality of Apia. In 1840, by royal decree, a merger of municipalities took place, and Kokkoni became part of the municipality of Corinth. [3] A reference to Kokkoni is made by the German traveler Ludwig Salvatore, who in 1876 described it as a village by the sea with 80 houses and two churches, of St. Basil and St. Nicholas. [4] In 1886 the community seems to have had 224 inhabitants. [5]
With the administrative division of 1912, Kokkoni became an independent settlement that included Poulitsa and Hadjimustafa (today's Evangelistria). From 1927 it was an administratively separate community, until 1997 when it was merged with the Municipality of Velos.
