Kivotos (Κιβωτός) Grevena

Kivotos (Ark) is a village in the prefecture of Grevena and belongs to the municipality of Grevena. It is built at an altitude of 680 meters and is adjacent to the settlements of Kokkinia, Polydendron and Agios Georgios. [1] It is one of the largest villages in Grevena, very close to the confluence of the rivers Aliakmonas-Pramoritsa.

Kivotos is a predominantly Pontian village with refugee populations, mainly from the Western Pontus. It is located on the western borders of the Prefecture, between Grevena - Neapoli - Kastoria road.

Until the Asia Minor catastrophe, the village was inhabited mainly by Greek-speaking Muslims, who, with the Treaty of Lausanne, relocated to Gieselburtz in Cappadocia. Refugees from various parts of Pontus and Asia Minor settled in the village. The name Ark according to one version is due to this fact. That is, that it gathered like Noah's Ark, inhabitants from many different areas!

The explanation of the other name of Kivotos, is the following:

When the population exchange took place, the inhabitants of the Ark chartered a ship to travel to Greece. Motherland… as they say. But they fell victim to exploitation and delusion! Because they collected their fares and then boarded them on an abandoned and decommissioned ship, offshore! Left there, they stayed for more than 3 weeks, waiting in vain for their departure. This adventure of waiting on the decommissioned ship, like Noah on his Ark, was the reason for the name of their village, Ark. The old name was Krifci.

The many forests hid the village from the eyes of passers-by. This is the reason for the old name Krifci.

The natural beauties - the excellent climate and fishing in the rivers of the area, complement and enhance a core of features, especially attractive to visitors. The great-grandparents of the Kivotians came from Argyroupoli, in the mines of which they worked as skilled miners. Over the years, the mines of Argyroupoli closed. It is said that this was done for reasons of expediency by German companies.

The Argyropolite great-grandparents were forced to emigrate to the areas where there were mines (Pakur Maten, Keskin Maten, Buga Maten and Ak-Tag Maten). When the mines of their new facility were closed, they were forced to change the profession of miner to that of farmer and stockbreeder. In the vast plain (highlands) of Ak-Tag Maten began the deforestation.

Their first concern was to provide a church, a priest and a teacher. High school of the time (secondary education) operated in the city of Maten and in the main village of Garapyr. That's where the exchange found them, with the application of which they found themselves in today's Ark.

The progressive perception, the industriousness and the open mind of the Kivotians, contributed to the beginning of the development in their new home.

However, the wars that ensued resulted in bloodshed and, above all, unlimited material damage. Only one house, by Stathis Panagiotidis, had been erected. Probably for their own use, as Command.

The phrase "no stone was left unturned" would have its absolute application here!

The Cubans, after the wars, were thrown back into life "with worn-out tools", according to the poet! With personal work, they built a three-seat Primary School and their current church.

In the year 1950 they founded their Sports and Cultural Association. With rich action in all areas. Later, the Association was divided into Cultural and Sports.

Today the Cultural Association is in the hands of young people, full of vigor, hard work and mood! The following active departments are available at the Association:

Small and large Dance Department
Choir Department
Theatrical Department

The rich cultural heritage of the "Lost Homelands" is revived at every opportunity, in customs and events that are maintained to this day.
