Kato Panagia (Κάτω Παναγία) Ilia
Kato Panagia is a village in Ilia, former independent community and municipal district since 2011 of the Municipality of Andravida - Kyllini.
History
It was originally created to house refugees who came to Greece after the Asia Minor catastrophe of 1922, from the homonymous village at the westernmost tip of Asia Minor. [1] Kato Panagia, like most of the villages created for the housing of refugees, is characterized by strict urban planning, at least in terms of the area originally used for this purpose. Also characteristic is the uniformity of all the houses that were originally built while today few of them survive.
Economy
The main source of income for the residents of D.D. is the agriculture and fishing with the famous olive oil produced by the area. Kato Panagia, in essence, has now - urbanly - merged with the neighboring D.D. Kyllini, which is also the seat of the Municipality, where the port of Kyllini is located, the main gateway for the movement of goods and passengers to and from the islands of Zakynthos and Cephalonia.
