High quality table grapes are produced. Inside the village is the church of Prophet Elias, which was built in 1888 and near Katalagari there is the church of Panagia with whitewashed frescoes. There is a Primary School. In 2000 in the village of Katalagari was built by Katerina Chamilaki the Logari, [1] Cretan food center. The Blessed Metropolitan of Petra and Herronissos Nektarios came from the village.
Historical data
Katalagari is mentioned in 1271: The widow of Aggelos Vitalis owes to Judas Michalis, 100 mists of wine from her vineyards in the village of Katalagari (A. Lombardo, Documenti della Colonia Veneziana di Creta, p.119). In 1302 it was a manor of Stephanus de Ancona (R. Morozzo della Rocca, Fonti per la storia di Venezia, p. 212).
In 1583 Catalagari (Kastrofylakas, K94) is mentioned with 140 inhabitants. Barozzi (fo24v) mentions Catalogari.
Designation
The name comes from lagara = liquid free from any foreign substance, settled, clean and clear, lambikos [2] (eg lagora wine).
Lagara in particular means "the juice that settles in the linen before [3] the grapes are pressed".
Lagara also means a rare slope with a good view [4] but also the clear and clean.
We can therefore conclude that the name Katalagari comes from the combination of the words Kato + Lagara. Most likely, Pano Lagara was Paliochora.
It is noted that in the Greek language very rarely the o becomes a in the colloquial, so that Kato + Logari = Katalagari.
