Kastanonas (Καστανών) Ioannina

Kastanonas is a mountain village in the prefecture of Ioannina. It is built at an altitude of 1,030 meters on the slopes of northern Pindos and is considered the most romantic village of An. Zagori due to its nature. Kastanonas belongs to the municipality of Zagori and according to the 2001 census it has 44 inhabitants. The oldest name of the village was Dragari. [1]

During the German occupation (1941-1944) a large part of the settlement was set on fire, as a result of which today the traditional Zagorian architecture has been preserved only in a part of the village. Captain Dimitrios Vragalis, commander of the independent Zagorian Corps of EDES, came from Kastanonas and had his headquarters during the resistance of the 2nd FP. In the village there is a very limited number of rooms for rent.
