Kastania (Καστανέα) Korinthia
Kastania is a village in the prefecture of Corinth and belongs administratively to the municipality of Sikyonia. The local unit of Kastania also includes the settlements of Karteri and Mikros Mahalas.
Kastania got its name from a large chestnut forest that existed in the area.
Position
Kastania is built at the foot of Mount Kyllini (Ziria). It is 80 km from Corinth. The main occupations of the inhabitants are agriculture and animal husbandry, and more recently mild tourism.
Population
According to the 2011 census, Kastania has a population of 107 inhabitants, Karteri has 96 inhabitants, while Mikros Mahalas has only 11 inhabitants.
History
The chestnut forest provided the villagers with significant economic comfort during the Turkish occupation. As a result, they managed to significantly strengthen the liberation struggle of the Greeks through the provision of food and ammunition. The leader of the villagers was the priest George Nikas or Papanikas.
The chestnut forest was destroyed around 1825. There are two versions of its extinction. One blames Ibrahim's army and the other the civil strife between the Notaras family in the summer of 1826. During the civil war, Papanikas' house was destroyed in retaliation for his non-participation in the conflict.
Eustathios Papakonstantinou (1864-1953) and his son Konstantinos Papakonstantinou (1907-1989), who served as Member of Parliament for Corinth, Deputy Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Speaker of Parliament, came from Kastania.
