Karvounari (Καρβουνάρι) Thesprotia
Karvounari is a settlement in the prefecture of Thesprotia. It is built at an altitude of 140 meters, 49 km SE of Igoumenitsa. It is administratively open to the Municipality of Souli and has 427 inhabitants (2001). Karvounariou has 527 inhabitants who are divided into two villages, Karvounari (427 inhabitants) and Kyra Panagia (100 inhabitants).
The area where the village is located has been inhabited since prehistory. During the Turkish occupation, the village was located on the slopes of Mount Koutsoumberi. After the revolution of 1821, the Karvounarites continued to fight for liberation in 1854, 1878 and 1897. Finally, the village was liberated by the Greek Army on February 23, 1913. After the liberation, the villagers moved from the slope to the plain where the crops were grown. areas and there is the village today. [1]
The local football team "APS Keravnos Karvounariou", competes in the A 'amateur category, one of the most predictable teams in the prefecture of Thesprotia. The team has its own stadium which was renovated in 2009 with a state-of-the-art plastic lawn. The stadium has neither floodlights nor stands for spectators. [2] The football team of Karvounario finished 2nd in the local championship of Thesprotia (A1) in the period 2011-12. This year, after the qualifying group stage, he will compete in the A2 Division of Thesprotia. [3]
