Galatas is a town in the municipality of Chania in the homonymous prefecture in western Crete. According to the 2011 census, Galatas has 3,166 inhabitants. Historical data

The village is mentioned in 1577 by Francesco Barocci as Galata. In the census of Kastrofylakas (K240) of 1583, it is mentioned as Galata with a population of 215 inhabitants. [1] Due to its current location, during the centuries Galatas often became a place of war: in 1645, during the siege of Chania, it became a camp of the Ottoman forces. During the Revolution of 1821, Galatas repeatedly became a battleground between the Greek revolutionaries and the Ottomans [2], with battles in 1821, 1823 and 1829, [1] while battles were fought in the area during the 1896 Revolution. - 1898 [3].

In 1881, Galatas belonged to the municipality of Perivolia. In fact, according to the Ottoman census of the same year, it had a population of 722 inhabitants, with the Christians constituting the vast majority [4].

During the Battle of Crete in May 1941, Galatas was given a fierce battle between the allied and German troops, [5] with the Germans prevailing after six days of fighting. 276 Greeks and New Zealanders were killed in the battle, as well as about 1,500 Germans. At the same time, the community was honored after the war with the golden excellence of bravery. In the village there is a museum for the Battle of Galatas.

Other clues

Near Galata there is a fertile plain with olive groves and citrus. In the settlement is the paternal home of the family of the composer Mikis Theodorakis [6] which has been purchased by the municipal authority and is intended for a cultural center [7]. Nearby is the seaside resort of Kalamaki, which is a port of Galatasaray.

Remains of a Minoan settlement have been discovered at the "Psathi" site, on the shores of Galata.
