Evangelismos (Ευαγγελισμός) Evoia

Evangelismos (or Dramesi) is a semi-mountainous settlement in southern Evoia with a population of 139 inhabitants, according to the 2011 Census. [1] It belongs administratively to the Municipality of Karystos of the Regional Unit of Evia. It is located 42 km northeast of Karystos, inside Cape Merouti, and is built in a coastal area.

A village whose geographical location makes it visible from the ships that pass daily through the Strait of Cape Doro. In fact, from the area of the settlement is sometimes visible - except for Andros - dimly Chios and Mytilene (only under conditions and at sunrise, see Earthly refraction) as well as the islet "Kalogeroi" and other Aegean islands . The village is built from the location of the area "Kalogeri" to the point "Ai-Giorgis". In particular, part of the settlement is built on the slope of a hill while the main part of the settlement is located in an imaginary straight line of Cape Merouti (or Merouni) and extends to the entire eastern side of the area. There are also two small rivers whose estuaries end at the village beach (Limniona).

History

It was called "Dramesi" from the Arvanitika "Dramssat", a name exactly as it was in the settlement of Paralia Avlidos in Chalkida. These two villages also share the same surname. The word "drums" is incorrectly associated with the word "drumsa" (which in Arvanitika is pronounced "dr'msa"), which is a type of food, since they are words of different roots.

It was renamed Evangelismos, after the name of the central Church on July 26, 1954 (Government Gazette 188/1954). The name was even introduced by the priest Fr. Nikolaos Glykos, who was then serving as pastor in Komitos. Its history dates back to the period of Ottoman rule, when the second settlement of the Arvanites took place, which was on a smaller scale, and lasted until the 16th century. On the west side of the village there was a monastery complex which belonged to the Monastery of Andros, the location still bears the name "Kalogeri". April 1790.

The village was connected via the Komitos road in the late 60's, while its connection to the Komitos-Kapsouriou provincial network took place in 1987. On the east side of the settlement there are four Holy Temples: Agios Nikolaos, Evangelismos tis Theotokou, Agios Georgios and Agia Triada and on the north side the Holy Temple of Hagia Sophia.

Notes

Most of the inhabitants come from Arvanites who settled in the area during the Turkish occupation, if we take into account their surnames (mainly two syllables) another part of the inhabitants comes from Central Asia (an influx that took refuge in Cape Doro in the 15th century) . At the same time, another part of the inhabitants comes from the Peloponnese, more specifically from Mani, and have surnames ending in -akos or -akos, which still exist today.

Ancient tombs with relics have been found in the settlement, a fact that shows the presence of culture in the wider area since antiquity. It is also noteworthy that Charhamboli is 3 km away from Evangelismos.
