Drygies (Δρυγιαί ) Rethymno
Drygies is a village in the municipality of Amari, in the regional unit of Rethymno, Crete. According to the 2011 census, they have 26 inhabitants. They are 47 km from Rethymno and are built at an altitude of 580 m. [1]
Historical data
The village is mentioned by Francesco Barocci in 1577 as Dhries. In the Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofylakas he is mentioned as Dries with 57 inhabitants and 112 due chores. [1] The 1834 census conducted by the Egyptians in the village recorded 5 Christian and 2 Muslim families. [1]
The 1881 census mentions the municipality of Apodoulou and had 61 inhabitants, all Christians. In the 1900 census it had 92 inhabitants and belonged to the same municipality. In the 1920 census it is mentioned as attached to the rural municipality of Ano Meros. [1] In 1925 the village was annexed to the community of Ano Meros until the Kapodistrian administrative division, when it was annexed to the Municipality of Sivritos. [2] Since 2011 it belongs to the municipality of Amari.
Following the abduction of Lt. Gen. Cruyff in 1944, German occupation forces retaliated by destroying the center's villages. During the operation, the Germans delayed encircling the village, and so its residents, alerted by shepherds, managed to leave. Thus, the Germans were content to destroy the village buildings. [3]

The church of the village is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. [3]
