Charkia ) is a village c. 15 km from Rethymno city. Around 2 km east of Charkia a Minoan settlement was found with pottery from 3000 BC.
Charkia is mentioned in a document from 1577 as Gharchia. In the year 1583 as Carchia with a population 128. One century later in 1659 it is called by the Turks Harkia with 24 houses. About the name there are different opinions. One version is that the name is derived from the arabic word Charkia, or from the cretan word Charakia (rocks).
