Palaioskamia (Παλαιοσκαμιά) Arta
Palaioskamia or Palaioskamnia is a small coastal settlement of the Municipality of Arta with 36 permanent residents (2011 census), next to the Amvrakikos gulf and belongs to the local community of Polydroso. [1]
According to the Kapodistrias Plan, Palaioskamia existed until the end of 2010, a settlement of the newly formed Municipality of Amvrakikos with its seat in Aneza. Based on the new administrative division provided by the Kallikratis Plan, Palaioskamia joined the Municipality of Arta. [2] The settlement is about 17 km from the city of Arta. Almost all the inhabitants are Vlachs.
The first official reference to the settlement is made in the 1981 census, which was published in the Official Gazette B '370 - 14.06.1982 and informs us that the population of the settlement amounted to 69 inhabitants. [3] In the early 1960s, new roads began to be laid and asphalting of the main road connecting the city of Arta with Koronisia took place, making access to the city easier. At that time, the land was distributed to Vlachs from Syrrako, Ioannina and Vathipedo, Ioannina, followed by the permanent settlement in Paleoskamia. The area was not unknown to the specific populations because before the distribution of the land they came down from the mountains in the summers to graze their flocks. [4] [5] [6] Seraphim Xenopoulos, the Byzantine, metropolitan of Arta in the "Essay Historian on Artis & Preveza" (published in 1884), informs us that in the area near today's Paleoskamia and specifically in the bay of Salaora there was a ruined 18th church dedicated to the 14th By order of Ali Pasha of Ioannina, some families from Heimarra settled there but left the specific location after the extermination of Ali Pasha due to the swamp and malaria that plagued the area. [7]
Location and Access
Palaioskamia is close to Polydroso, Vigla and Aneza and is a short distance from the bay of Salaora in the Amvrakikos gulf and the distance from Koronisia is about 11 km. A short distance away is the Viglas pumping station, a drying project of the 1950s by a team of Dutch engineers. [8] It is connected by road to Arta via the Arta-Koronisias Provincial Road. Access from the settlement to the provincial road was possible until 2012 via the bridge at Maglara, but it was deemed unsuitable and access until 2014 could only be made through the bridge at the pumping station. In the summer of 2014, the new Belei-type bridge was launched, with a length of 28 m and a width of 3.81 m, and allows the passage of mixed vehicles weighing up to 15 tons. [9] [10] [11] The settlement is served by the line Arta-Koronisia, of the Urban KTEL of Arta. [12] The residents of the village go to church in the church of Agios Athanasios Polydrosos.
